Your Back Pain Conundrum!
It's a conundrum! Chronic or recurring low back pain can plague some peoples' lives. Affected people are afraid of movements that aggravate the pain but they also want to enjoy an active life too! Does this sound familiar? How do you find the right balance? Although every patient is different, there are some simple things you can do to manage back pain.
A good place to start is understanding the concept that “motion is lotion.” Being motionless for long periods of time will aggravate back pain. Sitting a lot will weaken both core and gluteal muscles, put pressure on lower spinal discs and cause tightness of the leg muscles. Changing positions regularly reduces strain and will pump nourishing blood through your muscles. Set an alert on your phone to remind you to get out of your chair every 30 minutes and take a quick walk around your room. Also, do squats by bending your knees so you are touching the chair with your backside and then standing up again. If you feel stiff while sitting, stretching will help, but you do need to understand which muscles are tight to know which stretch will help.
Away from the office, there are other exercises you can do to help relieve back pain. Working on your core muscles helps improve back pain -- use this link to read my USE YOUR CORE blog. Planks, “bird dog” and supine bridges help to coordinate all the muscles around the abdomen to support the spine. General exercise also benefit chronic low back pain. Walking is an easy and effective way to move your whole body. If you want to increase the effort, using nordic poles will make the upper body and spine more active. Low impact exercises like elliptical and bicycling are great ways to move the joints without the increased pressure of activities such as running.
A course of chiropractic adjustments is an effective course of treatment for back pain, and keeps aches and pains under control. Dr. Doug can identify which exercises and stretches will best help you recover, and which ones are the ones to keep you moving without pain.
