5 Useful Tips To Ease Joint Pain
Joint pain is no fun!
Here is Dr. Doug's countdown to ease joint pain with these 5 tips:
5. Don’t think joint pain is normal. People assume certain things are just part of aging. Joint pain doesn’t have to be. You might feel stiff and “creaky” first thing in the morning, but after 15-20 minutes, that should go away with normal activity or a bit of stretching. If your pain is on the high end of the 1-10 pain scale, or if you have hot, swollen joints - get it checked out.
4. Watch what you eat. Studies show that a diet high in ultra-processed foods may increase the risk of arthritis. And many studies show that an “anti-inflammatory diet,” like the Mediterranean diet, can help reduce inflammation that can cause joint pain.
3. Lose weight. Reducing the pressure on your joints will be quite a relief for you. Being heavy won’t cause arthritis, but losing weight has been shown to ease joint pain.
2. Motion is lotion… literally. Many joints like the hips and knees contain synovial fluid that helps nourish the cartilage. By moving your joints, you help move the fluid around in the joint, delivering nutrients to the cartilage (which has no blood supply to do this). Lubricating the cartilage with movement helps get rid of stiffness and discomfort. Doing low impact exercises like yoga, Pilates, tai chi or swimming helps improve mobility and helps prevent injury by strengthening the muscles that support your joints.
1. SEE YOUR CHIROPRACTOR. Before you start with stretches and exercises, you need to make sure your joints are moving properly. Chiropractors are trained to safely treat stiff, sore joints, prescribe individualized exercises that restore mobility and improve the strength of the muscles that support your joints.
