Spinal Decompression Can Help

Do you suffer with back pain from a degenerated disc or a herniated discs? Does your pain radiate into your buttock or further down your leg? You might benefit from spinal decompression therapy!

Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-surgical approach to treating degenerated or herniated discs in the spine. It reduces pressure on the nerves as they exit from the spinal cord and pass through openings in the spine.

Pressure on the nerves is caused by one or more of the following factors:

  1. Directly compression by a herniated or bulging disc as it exits the spine.

  2. Indirect compression by a degenerated disc which causes that opening in the spine where the nerve exits to be smaller.

  3. Arthritis of spinal facet joints may cause bone spurs which reduce the opening for the nerve to pass through.

  4. With any of the above 3 reasons, the muscles that link one vertebra to the next may be in spasm, reducing both mobility of the spine or the opening for the nerve and potentially causing moderate to excruciating pain.

Non-invasive Spinal Decompression Therapy requires a specialized treatment table that allows a top-to-bottom elongation of the spine, usually in a repeated manner rather than a sustained one. This approach helps to relax tight muscles. A reduction of tension creates more space for the nerve to pass through the opening. Stretching and mobility exercises are given in conjunction with treatment on the decompression table to support and maintain the reduction of pain.

Who can benefit from spinal decompression therapy?

  1. People who have degenerated discs through injury or aging,

  2. People with bulging or herniated discs

  3. People who have arthritis in their spine particularly a type known as stenosis, or some people who have sciatica (depending on the cause of the sciatica).

  4. Not everyone can benefit from decompression as it could aggravate some conditions. A full physical examination helps determine a patient’s likely response to spinal decompression therapy.

If you have low back pain and other approaches haven’t worked for you, ask Dr. Doug - Brampton Chiropractor about Spinal Decompression Therapy.
